Construction Process: Hand-Painted Canvas Rugs

Each rug, from the initial design to the finished product, takes about three to four weeks to complete. Each hand-painted rug is comprised of about 12-14 layers.

All rugs have a sewn hem with mitered corners. Other rug makers may use glue to hem their rugs. We believe that a sewn hem will make our rugs more durable. Each rug usually has a 2 inch hem. Larger rugs may require a larger hem.

We strive to make rugs that are "square." We make every attempt to ensure that our measurements are even. However, it is not uncommon for a perfectly cut rug to shrink up to 1/2 an inch during the painting process. This is due to variable canvas, gesso and paint characteristics. Posh Canvas Rugs also lie completely flat on the floor.

Here is how we construct each of our rugs:

 

Layer 1- Polyacrylic Undercoat (makes rugs water and stain resistant)

 

Layer 2- Gesso Undercoat (serves as a primer for paint)

 

Layer 3- Heavy Duty Canvas (We use #8-18 oz. and #10-14.5 oz. canvas)

 

Layer 4- Gesso Top Coat #1 (serves as a primer for paint)Layer 5- Gesso Top Coat #2

 

Layer 6- Base Color Paint Coat #1 (only high-quality acrylic latex paint is used)Layer 7- Base Color Paint Coat #2

 

Layer 8- Color Design Layer #1Layer 9- Color Design Layer #2 and possibly Layer #3 if needed

 

Layer 10- Polyacrylic Finisher Coat #1 (makes rugs water and stain resistant)Layer 11- Polyacrylic Finisher Coat #2Layer 12- Polyacrylic Finisher Coat #3Layer 13- Polyacrylic Finisher Coat #4 (optional gloss or satin finish)

Painting Options:

Color Wash-   Adds depth to a field of color.

Sponging-   Adds depth and texture (adding paint with a sponge).

Marbling-   Creates a marbled look.

Ragging-  Adds depth and texture (taking away paint with a cloth).

Dragging-  Creates a striped/streaked look.
